Piano Man
Oftentimes when people see images of war they are shown crumbled buildings, burning tanks, the devastation of civilians lives, or soldiers bravely fighting for their lives. Very rarely do you get to see the softer more human side of war. This image of a Russian soldier in his one-piece army issue snowsuit with his Kalashnikov rifle casually slung over his shoulder both captures the horror and human side of war. The lonely piano looks like it was intently placed in the middle of the war torn forest to offer a taste of music and maybe even some memories of home. the Rubble spewed across the forest floor and crooked flagpole could be a sign that a potentially deadly battle has taken place here, a huge contrast to the peacefulness of the image. Despite the scratches that cover the piano its glossy wood finish still shines through. It almost reflects the soldier in his dirty uniform and muddy boots that is staring intently at the bright white keys of the piano. Maybe he is there to play some music for his fellow squad mates or perhaps he just wanted a closer look at this solo musical giant that was left out to rot in the woods. As his glove-less hand slides across the keys he could be trying to recall how to play his favorite tune or even just mixing keys together to make any sort of music to lighten the mood. The main focus of the image is the soldier and the piano, but also the lack of anything around it, making it feel like it is just you and him out in the cold crisp air with the warm memories of home rushing to your head and the soft sounds of music flowing through the trees.
